The literature of dhāraṇī is extensive. There are many separate texts bearing the title of dhāraṇī, as well as collections numbering several hundred dhāraṇīs each (dhāraṇī-saṃgraha).

With Nagarjuna Institute of Buddhist Studies in Kathmandu, Nepal, ALL works to preserve the wisdom of Dharani literature for future generations.

Vasudhārā Vrata (Gātilādhāla Danegu) is a pop

Vasudhārā Vrata (Gātilādhāla Danegu) is a popular ceremony dedicated to the worship of Vasudhārā. It falls on a full moon harvest during the lunar month of Bhadra (August to September), and it is performed for two consecutive days. It is believed that one who performs this Vrata will get seven kinds of gifts: wealth, quality, offspring, longevity, happiness, praise, and wisdom. This ceremony is performed using texts preserved by the Asian Legacy Library.

Dr. Miroj Shakya, Associate Professor at the University of the West and Director of Sanskrit Operations at ALL, presented a paper titled “The Digital Dharani Project: Preserving Rare Incantation Manuscripts from Nepal at the PNC 2022 Annual Conference and Joint Meetings hosted by the University of Arizona, Tucson, USA, on September 16-18, 2022.

The main theme was the Digital World in an Age of Uncertainty: Humanizing Technology for Wellness, Resilience, and Creativity. The program focused on topics including Digital Learning, Information Science and E-business, Digital Humanities, and Techno-cultural Data in a Post-pandemic World.

Dr. Shakya introduced a new Dhāraṇī Preservation Project of the Asian Legacy Library (ALL) and Nagarjuna Institue of Buddhist Studies (NIBS) and its goals at the conference and highlighted the importance of Dhāraṇī, and discussed why there is a need for the preservation of endangered and rare Dhāraṇī collections from Nepal.

You may ask: how have we kept ALL thriving and growing for thirty-five years just on donations, not charging at all to use our database on our website, and being supported mainly by sponsors like you?

ALL works the “Seed System”— giving first to others what we wish for ourselves. Every year ALL gives a percentage of its income to support other organizations focused on making a beneficial impact in the world.

Looking back over the past thirty-five years, we see how successful this system has been in helping to keep ALL growing and thriving so that we can preserve even more timeless wisdom manuscripts for future generations.

Starting in 2023, to honor our 35th anniversary, we wish to support a women’s Sanskrit boarding school in Varanasi, India. Dr. Santosh Dwivedi, Director of our Varanasi Input Center, introduced us to the Panini Kanya University. There are few schools in India which provide such high quality Sanskrit education. Established in 1971, this boarding school currently has 120 young women from all parts of India studying traditional Sanskrit grammar (Vyakarana), the Vedas, Upanishads, yoga, meditation, and martial arts, as well as contemporary university subjects.

The future is now. As we celebrate our 35th anniversary, it's amazing to contemplate the legacy that ALL is leaving to the world. Over our multi-decade history, Asian Legacy Library has safeguarded, preserved, and shared over three million pages of timeless wisdom.

Digital Preservation of Manuscripts in Nepal, a collaboration between Asian Legacy Library and the Nagarjuna Institute of Buddhist Studies, together commenced the transcription of these nine sutras in 2019:

Miroj Shakya: So far, we have completed the transcription of five sutras.
Second, the Digital Dhāraṇī Project is pioneering work that the Asian Legacy Library started in March 2022 in collaboration with the Nagarjuna Institute of Buddhist Studies we plan to locate and scan 108 dhāraṇī manuscripts from local collections and libraries of the Kathmandu Valley. We then plan to transcribe these 108 dhāraṇī manuscripts into Roman and Devanagari script to display both scan and transcription on the ALL website.

It’s been thirty-five years of Asian Legacy Library (ALL), and the future is bright. ALL has grown exponentially from the inception of the Asian Classics Input Project (ACIP) as an input-only project. Today, ALL’s state-of-the-art digital library houses our ACIP data, as well as data from several additional Asian wisdom traditions. The ALL database is the source preserving timeless wisdom, which houses over 600,000 searchable pages of transliterated original works, all of which are freely available online.

These texts are ancient. What's in them isn't. They contain both the philosophy and practice to elevate our World View and create Compassion, Joy, and Loving Kindness. What the world needs now more than ever.

At the Asian Legacy Library we have been locating, digitizing, and sharing for free the timeless wisdom traditions of Asia. The precious books that we save contain the writings of some of the greatest contemplative masters in history. Thank you for your support.

In collaboration with Kathmandu-based Nagarjuna In

In collaboration with Kathmandu-based Nagarjuna Institute of Buddhist Studies (NIBS), ALL is carrying out a groundbreaking project to preserve thousands of manuscript pages of Sanskrit Buddhist literature known as dharani. Sometimes translated as “spells,” these brief texts are understood by diverse Buddhist communities across vast spans of time and geography to have been taught by Shakyamuni Buddha for two key purposes: first, to provide protection against worldly misfortune and calamity, and second, to distill the essence of the Buddhist teachings, the Dharma.

The dharani shown in this image is the Gaṇapati-hṛdayā Dhāraṇī, which honors the deity Ganésa. The Dhāraṇī claims that if anyone recites and practices the Gaṇapati hṛdaya for seven days, he will accomplish every task. All strife and quarrels will go away forever, and violence and envy will turn into calmness. If one continues to practice and abides by the rules every seven days a week, he will obtain fortune and be free from any sickness in his body. In each rebirth, he will be able to remember his previous lives.

The wisdom and compassion that exist’s in our world is both fragile and timeless. ALL is hard at work preserving these timeless ideas making sure they don’t disappear from our world and are made available to anyone, for free.

The idea for the preservation project is born at t

The idea for the preservation project is born at the Pyne Hall offices of the Department of Classics of Princeton University in 1987. Princeton Department of Classics chairman, Prof. Samuel D. Atkins (1911-2002), an expert of Greek, Latin, & Sanskrit, joins the project advisory board; as does Prof. William LaFleur (1936-2010), of the University of California at Los Angeles.

Extraordinary scholar and visionary Khen Rinpoche Geshe Lobsang Tharchin (1921-2004) becomes the inspiration and chief literary advisor to the project.

The founding team of the project assembled: Director, Michael Roach, Princeton University graduate & liaison; Assistant Director, Robert Taylor PhD, of the U.S. Department of Transportation; John Malpas, developer of Tibetan input software; Steve Bruzgulis, inventor of first Tibetan word processor; and Ven. Thupten Pelgye, overseas input center manager. Robert Chilton provides invaluable technical expertise, especially as Unicode is developed as a universal standard for computer fonts.

The project receives a grant from the Hewett-Packard Foundation to build its first data entry center in the South Indian town of Bylakuppe.

Licenses the Tibetan and Sanskrit listings of the U.S. Library of Congress and converts listings to easily searchable form for public release; staff are selected for advising the Library of Congress on future purchases of Tibetan-language materials, and produces a catalog of 1,100 titles for acquisition.
